A Rush of Connections and Insights, a Glorious Moment of Clarity

Gary Davis and Mercedes McGowen

We detail a story of a pre-service elementary teacher who started a college mathematics class with low expectations, determined however to uncover insights. This student gained increasing insight into connections between different combinatorial problems and was able to utilize her prior knowledge to solve a combinatorial problem posed by other students. Her story illustrates the importance of episodic memory in the formation of mathematical connections and the development of cognitive flexibility in mathematical thinking.
